KitKat Cola and Lemon Squash (2010)
KitKat is known for its innovative flavors, and they have certainly capitalized on that reputation in Japan. So many tourists now buy bags of KitKats to take back as easy and fun gifts for friends back home.
The domestic snack food market has had its fair share of "interesting" KitKat flavors. The Cola and Lemon Squash KitKat from 2010 is on the outer edge of that territory. Inside the box were two sets of small KitKats of each flavor.

The Cola KitKat was a missed opportunity. The chocolate didn't taste like cola, and the overall flavor was bland. Cola is not a natural chocolate flavor choice, so I credit them for trying.
The Lemon Squash KitKat, on the other hand, was excellent. The citrus and chocolate flavors paired perfectly, and the soda-y, almost ramune flavor added a nice touch.
Conclusion
I wish there was a way to keep these old flavors around. The Cola KitKat was a miss, but the Lemon Squash KitKat was a great chocolate experience. And the anticipation after buying it and before actually eating it is always so much fun. If you're lucky enough to find one, try it, although, at this date, it is likely way beyond the sell-by date.

Lemon Squash KitKat Cupcakes Recipe

Cake mixes are getting easier to find in grocery stores in Japan, and the 100 Yen Shops Daiso and Seria have baking sections with cupcake cups, cake mixes, icing mixes, and piping bags.
You can search for American box cake mixes in Japan, like Betty Crocker or Pillsbury, at a few places. Amazon is ok, but the prices can be high. You can also find American box cake mixes at international supermarkets like National Azabu-Juban or Nissin Supermarket.
I can't recommend Tomizawa Shoten enough if you want to go full homemade. They have an online store, but I love going to their retail locations to look at all the great ingredients and supplies they have. And if you are in Kappabashi, go to Okashi no Mori or Majimaya.
Whether you go full homemade or use mixes, adding a bit of charm and flavor is easy with Japanese KitKats.
